Theme(s)
Theme(s):
• How does this film relate to your topic: English as a Global Language?
In the film "East ist East" some of them are talking with an accent (indian). They also use a lot of slang, like - Bloody, wich they use, almost in every sentence.
Just Below the Surface:
immigrants - trying to integrate >< East is East (the father not interested in integration)
In both the text and the film we have a patriarchal family (the father= in charge).
• Find more themes…
- Immigrant(s)
- Muslim background
- Forced marriage

Climax - Ending - Problem solved?
Climax:
When the children go against George (when he hits the mother).
Ending
The problem is solved because George realizes, that what his children want is not the same as he wants and he realizes, that these two cultures can't be united. (you can see this, when George walks away. That is a way to say, that he gives up his intentions). This might be difficult - new conflicts may arise.
The ending is good, because the problem is solved. But: will things remain in this way? Open ending...

What does the title mean in relation to the film as a whole?
The title means, that if you forexample are a Muslim, you have to be a Muslim all the time.
You will always be seen as one, you can't change it.
George means that you can't be in between, you are either a Muslim or a Christian. They live in England but he wants to raise his children as Muslims and carry on the traditions. He is having a hard time dealing with his family not being fully Muslims.
The procession in the beginning: Jesus/the Virgin Mary - the children attend this procession. They want to be members of the community, integrate into society.
